Self Care, A Very Unbeautiful Process
Self care.
It's something that you can decide to dive into head first, or avoid. It's often romanticized in today's world as "me time" while soaking in the tub with your limited edition bath bomb, and favorite glass of wine...and while that may be a part of a person's process...That's not truly what self care is. Doing that will help you to relax, which is important, do not get me wrong...but that's not solving/facing any issues or areas of you that need to be addressed. It's washing away the day.
My very good friend posted this article that she read on Facebook this morning, and I found it incredibly relate-able. Brianna Wiest wrote this, and I have never read something more true. I was hooked after the first sentence: "Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing."
Why? Because it's true.
Here is the article if you would like to read it: This Is What 'Self-Care' REALLY Means, Because It's Not All Salt Baths and Chocolate Cake
My journey with self-care has been an emotional one. Years of avoidance just made it all the more painful when I was finally ready to dive in and start working on myself. In the article, Brianna states "It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don't want to see them anymore...or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you're not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time..."
Brianna, Girl, YES. "exhausted from trying to be everything, all. the. time..."
My self-care includes a lot of writing. A lot of admitting my wrongs, or looking at where I could do better. I know better, so I should DO better. It's setting aside the fear and negativity in my brain and attempting to rewire it to think positively, and build myself up in the area's that need it most. I find that self reflection can be a positive thing, or a negative one.. It's super easy for me to slip into negative thinking, and as another very close friend worded it, you can fall into a negative state and just keep repeating the negative cycle, or you can rewire yourself to try to find the positive and it becomes a better process.
Self reflection itself is ugly. It's looking at yourself and realizing that you're not perfect. But you know what, that's OKAY. You don't have to be perfect. You can be average. You can be adequate (❤), and that's good! That's good enough!!
Every person's journey is different, unique, and what might work for me, might not work for you. It's all about finding what works best for you, to confront yourself. It's growth. It's important. It's an ugly necessity.
